A Special Day in the Studio

This Fall, I had the joy of hosting several guests from Moda Fabrics at my home studio for a day of Shibori instruction and Indigo dyeing. We celebrated the publication of my new Discover Shibori book and had a blast!

The group included Lissa Alexander - Marketing Director at Moda, Annie St. Cyr -photographer from the Media department at Moda (above left), Janet Clare - a fellow Moda designer from England and Jenny Rosendahl - a friend from north of Dallas (above right).

We gathered around my big studio table and started the day with a short lesson in Shibori Indigo Dyeing. Everyone was fascinated and I loved having the opportunity to share my passion for Shibori with these fellow creative women!

I had all the supplies the new dyers would need laid out on the table ready to go and lots of samples for inspiration. As a fellow fabric designer, Janet (above left) was particularly interested in seeing my samples and learning about my design process. We had a great visit!

We used my new natural Indigo fermentation vat and the results were wonderful. I'm so pleased with this vat. I'll explain the process for you in a future blog post! That's Lissa Alexander above. I loved seeing the happy look on her face as she dipped her hands into the magic of the deep, dark blue.

Dipping into the Indigo produced a big smile on Janet Clare's face, too! We dyed scarves, napkins and bandanas and everyone loved their dyeing experience.

After dyeing, we rinsed the pieces in the sink of the kitchen area of my studio. The reveal is always the most exciting part of the process! Jenny's scarf turned out so pretty and she was very pleased. You can see Janet in the background taking pictures to document our fun!

Lissa chose a smaller, square scarf and loved the piece she dyed, too! Both she and Jenny chose to do the Itajime technique using clamped, round acrylic shapes as a resist. It's always exciting for me to see the joy that Shibori Indio dyeing produces. Every piece is different and so uniquely individual.

Janet chose Arashi pole wrapping for her dyeing experience. It can be a bit awkward to do on your own, so I was happy to help her with the scrunching and wrapping. It's always fun to work with a partner!

Janet's finished scarf hanging on my backyard line to dry! Janet's piece turned out beautifully and she and I were both thrilled with the outcome. This scarf went home with her to England and will be a wonderful memory of her dyeing day at my home studio far away in Texas.

The five of us really had a wonderful day together and I am grateful to Annie St. Cyr for the beautiful pictures. We talked and shared and inspired each other all day long. Janet brought this beautiful vintage dress from the brocante' (flea market) in France to share with us. It was incredible!

Watch for more fun from Janet Clare and I soon! We'll be doing a Layer Cake giveaway from our Moda collections on Instagram and you'll have the chance to win. Click the links below to follow us now, so you'll be ready!
